Re: HD sound quality

Many people have stated that they have a hard time noticing whether the lossless audio from Blu-ray disks is significantly better than the audio from DVD - but yours is the first comment I've seen where someone thought the audio was noticeably worse. In what way do you find the quality is not as good, and on which DVDs? And to answer your question - no, this is not something I have noticed.

what discs did you compare? what is your setup? This is a really ambiguous statement so it would hard pressed for anyone to give you an opinion with knowing the specifics.

Re: HD sound quality

Well it may not be quality per se, but the loudness for sure, which may not see like a big deal but i just find it weird. for example on the first transformers, i found the sound louder and dont really see a difference in quality when i play the dvd. the bluray looks great just the sound seems much less impressive of a difference. i have an oppo bdp-83 and a yamaha 6190. pretty good equipment. i also have a ps3 and have noticed the same thing. would it be my receiver i wonder? it shows that it is coming out in the HD sound on the yamaha display though. again i just find it strange that i can listen to a dvd on -40, but will have to turn the same bluray up to about -25 to get the same volume. thanks guys for the input.

Re: HD sound quality

A difference in volume - with DVD audio often seeming to be "louder" than Blu-ray audio - is something many people have noticed. However, that difference in volume does not mean that the HD audio on Blu-ray is of lesser quality since there is no relationship between sound volume and sound quality. One of the reaons for the difference is likely due to the greater dynamic range of Blu-ray HD audio tracks - the sound is less compressed. The bottom line is that there is nothing wrong with your receiver - all you need to do is turn its volume up a bit when watching Blu-ray disks.

And you're sure that you really listening to a HD soundtrack? I saw a couple of case where the consummer was thinking that he listen to the HD portion of the BD but that was not the case. Not all systems are easy to handle.

:smileysurprised:

That's because they don't have a good calibrated audio system....The difference between the two formats, lossless and compressed are almost night and day on most discs. But of course, if someone is using a Bose system....:smileysad:

I'm not sure what you're asking me? i have no reason to not think i'm getting the HD sound track. but i'm willing to try something else if you have some advice to offer on what may be setup wrong.

Re: HD sound quality

I saw a couple of case where the player was indicating that the dts MA track was actually selected but it was in fact converted to standard dts and output in decoded PCM....The result was not better than dts in high bitrate. Good but not true HD.
