Need Suggestions for Home Theatre setup

I know very little about home theatre, so I need some expert advice.  My current setup is this:

- Samsung 40" LCD 1080p 120Hz tv

- Zotac Mag HD ND01 HTPC system (Ubuntu/Boxee, HDMI out, S/PDIF)

- Rogers Digital HD Box

- Xbox (rarely used)

The HTPC is conneted to the TV via HDMI, and the Digital Cable box is connected via RCA for audio and DVI-to-HDMI converter.

I control all of this with my harmony 550, which works quite well.

Anyways, I want to add some speakers to this setup.  I'm not looking for anything crazy.  I'm not an audiophile by any stretch.  I have no need for a DVD player nor a BluRay player.  So, basically I just want a way to add in speakers that can be used with the HTPC and Digital cable.

What kind of options do I have?  Am I forced to get an optical player?  Can you just get speakers by themselves, or do you need some sort of 'receiver' ?

Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Re: Need Suggestions for Home Theatre setup

Hi there,

Answer these questions

How will you be using these? Movies? Gaming? Music?

Is surround sound important?

How loud do you want it to be?

Does size of the speakers matter?

What is your budget?

And yes, you will need a receiver unless you want to go with an HTIB(home theatre in a box) solution.
