Pioneer 925 powering down

I am having issues with the receiver turning off when I turn the volume up to -20 on the display. I can turn it back on again immediately after. I checked my speaker connections making sure they aren't touching each other or the receiver itself. Wondering what to do, and if it needs to be sent in.

Thanks,

A few questions:

1. Is this receiver brand new? If not, how long have you owned it?

2. do the speakers  have the correct impedance rating for your Pioneer receiver (6 to 8 ohms)?

3. have you been using these speakers with this receiver for a while without any problems? Or is this the first time you have tried this setup?

The only other issue to verify beyond what you have done so far is to make sure that the problem is not being caused by a defect in one of your speakers. If possible, try another set of speakers. Or, try disconnecting one speaker at a time to see if the problem goes away. If the problem is (a) not caused by a short circuit in the external speaker connections or (b) not caused by a defect with a speaker or by using a speaker of the wrong impedance (ie 4 ohms) then yes - you will need to send the receiver in for service. If this receiver has been purchased from Future Shop within 30 days, then the easiest solution would be to return it to the store for exchange.

Re: Pioneer 925 powering down

- The reciever is 6 months or so old
- The reciever did turn off before, but seemed to stop for a while (or I did not turn it up too loud)
- I thought that it could have been my wiring, so I ignored it initially, but after checking my wires, I am leaning towards the amp.
I never considered testing the speakers. I will give that a try ( On a side note, wouldnt the amp be able to tell if the wires were crossed when calibrating the speakers itself?)

Thanks for your help,

Re: Pioneer 925 powering down

Yes, the amp would be able to tell if the wires were crossed by detecting a phase error during calibration. However simply having the wires crossed would of course not cause the amp to shut down and go into protect mode (which is presumably what is happening to your receiver) - that only happens if there is either a short circuit or heavy load across the speaker terminals of the amp.
