Receiver advice

I am looking at buying a new receiver. I'm looking for some advice on what to get based on some criteria I have.

- One HDMI cable to the TV for ALL hookups (so convert component from Wii, HDMI throughput from PS3, etc.)

- HDMI 1.4a for 3D

- TrueHD and DTS HD surround

- 7.1 channel

- Multi-room channels so I can watch a movie in one room but send audio through the ceiling speakers in the house.

I'm looking at both Futureshop and (competitor) and it seems like the only choices are almost $1000, which seems a bit high to me.

I might upgrade the speakers as well, if anyone has some ideas :smileyhappy:

Thanks!

Re: Receiver advice

If you want all that connectivity plus 3D plus multi-room, better open up the budget a little more.

The Pioneer VSX-1020-K lists for $799 at Future Shop, one of the better low-end options.

You could also consider the Onkyo TX-SR608 which is usually around $699, packs a little bit more power than the Pioneer but you have to look to competitors for that model as I don't believe it's carried by FS.

If you open up the pocket book, consider looking at the Denon 990 which lists for $1,699.

And remember that there are SALESMEN there, so strike a deal!

No-one will have any ideas about speakers if you don't mention what you already have. :-)

Re: Receiver advice

The Yamaha 6280 will also do the trick at $799.

If you are considering speakers, FutureShop has audio packages available that will save you a good chunk of change vs buying speakers and a receiver seperately. :smileywink: Most of the packages are not advertised, but you can find out by going in to talk to an associate.

Re: Receiver advice

Also look at the Denon AVR 891 which has the HDMI 1.4 version and is selling for a reasonable price. The other two receivers mentioned although being very good ,don't have the HDMI 1.4 which was one of your criteria.

Re: Receiver advice

Sorry but I just found out that their will be no 3D firmware update issued for the Yamaha 6280. :smileysad:

Re: Receiver advice

With respect to speakers, check out the Klipsch Reference series. Amazing reviews.

My choice would be Dennon...or Pioneer Elite..you will pay though..I'm sure Dennon has an ethernet port as well.  :-)
