The STR-DH700 (like virtually all other AV receivers on the market) is designed for use with an active subwoofer.
Virtually all subwoofers sold for use with home audio systems have their own built in amplifier and are therefore "active" subwoofers - which is why passive subwoofers are rarely discussed for home audio use. Passive subwoofers (basically, just a speaker in a box) tend to be used primarily in car audio systems, connected to a separate amp.

Hi same problem here,
so could I buy an amp and connect the sub through the amp then to the receiver through a subwoofer cable?
