Speaker performance

So my receiver died last week, luckily it was still during boxing week though so I managed to snag a good deal on a new on at FS :smileyhappy:

Anyway, I purchased the new receiver, but for now I have just hooked up the speakers from my old home theatre setup. I know little to nothing about matching speakers to receivers, so I was wondering if someone with more knowledge might take a look at these specs, and maybe offer some insight as to how my current speakers may be underperforming given the new receiver, and what sort of specs I might want to look for when purchasing new speakers (on top of adding 2 more to go from a 5.1 to 7.1 setup of course).

Here are the specs on my current speakers:

And here are the specs on my new receiver:

The Yamaha RXV571 A/V receiver lets you enjoy the richness and depth of a full high definition home theatre experience. With 7.1-channel output, sound surrounds you from all directions. And thanks to 6 HDMI inputs and support for 3D technology, you can connect and enjoy the latest high definition components.

Re: Speaker performance

[ Edited ]

You will eventually damage your receiver and/or speakers. The Yamaha is not capable of properly driving 4Ω speakers. Ω which is the symbol for "Ohm", and is a measure of electrical resistance, the lower the number the higher the load or resistance is, the efficiency is lower, thus more power is required to drive that load.

Most of the speakers that FutureShop sells, with the exception of some of the Martin Logans, are 8 ohm speakers, which is what you require for the Yamaha. For a small to medium room, they have several 5.1 subwoofer/satellite speaker sets from Energy or Polk. Large rooms or open concept are better suited to tower speakers, and also may require a more powerful receiver to take full advantage of what a larger speaker can offer.

Re: Speaker performance

Thanks for the response 3M, the associate I talked to when I picked up the receiver said that my current speakers may be damaged eventually, but not the other way around, so good to know. Will definitely jump on the next decent sale for a new set.

Re: Speaker performance

Ok, first off the Yamaha amps will support 4OHM (didn't know how to make the symbol).  Yamaha actually states and gives power ratings for 4OHM on the spec sheet for the 571 and the amps have a switch in the back to switch from 8/6/4OHM.

Next, are those a set of old HTIB speakers?  If so you may have a passive sub and newer amps won't support a passive sub properly.

Re: Speaker performance

What kind of speakers are these? What is the lowest frequency respons they are capable of?

usually a lower impedance speaker on a reciever that is rated for higher impedance loads does not pose a problem providing your speaker isn't capable of playing bass in the super low regions. Bass is hard to drive, so if your speaker is playing low frequencies at a higher volume level your reciever may get a little hotter.

different recievers have different tonal characteristics, and i find some recievers sound better with some speakers better than others.

- The ratings for 4ohm and 2 ohm are rated as 'Dynamic" or peak power, using a test tone in a lab on one channel driven for a nano-second. Even Yamaha's larger amps are only rated 4ohm stable on 2 channel (fronts) only and NOT on full surround

- There is NO switch, take a look at the photo on the link you posted. Also, the back of the receiver clearly states 6ohm and 8ohm...

A lot of manufacturers will say they "support" or are "compatible" with 4ohm or 2ohm loads. (Martin Logan is another example of a company stating compatibility between their electro-stats and main stream receivers FutureShop carries). This is equivalent to a fork being compatible to a bowl of soup, you simply won't get your moneys worth, and worse yet, you may lose everything.

People need to educate themselves diligently before purchasing.

"People need to educate themselves diligently before purchasing"

Yes they do! And since posting this thread and doing exactly that, I've upgraded to a fantastic set of 8ohm surround speakers that I'm very happy with. Thanks for the responses everyone.

Re: Speaker performance

The Yamaha will not be happy with a true 4 ohms load. And if you set the Yamaha for 6 ohms load, you'll loose power output, not a greai idea...

Anyway, specs for speakers are usually worthless so shop with your ears open...

I don't think FS carries receivers that will be able to drive perfectly the Martin Logan electrostatic floorstanders. You need beefy amplification to do that.
