Subwoofer is too quiet

[ Edited ]

I just purchased a Pioneer VSX-519V (10123910) and a Polk Audio PSW125 (10086833). So I hooked up the sub via the sub out (RCA cable) on the receiver to the LFE in on the sub. I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI directly to the receiver.

I hooked it up, cranked up the bass and tried a movie and some music but it really isn't very loud. I cranked up the knob on the back of the sub, barely a difference. I made sure sub was set to on via the receiver and it is. My current setup involves to floor speakers and the amp, all hooked up the the receiver. I tried playing around with the settings but it made no audible difference. I don't know much about this type of thing so it may just be something simple but I'm clueless at this point.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Subwoofer is too quiet

quick question, what is the size of the entire room, not just your listening area but open spaces as well (i.e., like a family room that opens into a kitchen)? Measure LxWxH.

Re: Subwoofer is too quiet

If I understand, you're in 2.1 channels. How did you configure your fronts speakers in the Pioneer: Large or small? If you want your sub to do some heavy lifting, you should consider to set your fronts speakers to small. This way, all the bass frequencies will be redirected to the subwoofer. But the Polk is not an overachiever so this setup will probably ask to much from it.

Re: Subwoofer is too quiet

I read the manuels for both the sub and the receiver and set the speakers accordingly as small. I use the Stereo setting on the receiver itself and the only way I can get any kind of bass out of the thing is by setting the sub to plus mode in the speaker setup. I just feel like I should be getting a little more bass just out of the default settings without having to crank up every possible extra bass setting.

Yes, you should.

What are the sub level and the crossover frequency settings in the receiver?

Re: Subwoofer is too quiet

Make sure that the crossover setting in your receiver is not lower than the lowest frequency of your other speakers. If it is you will be missing the sound in between. As an example, lets say you have satellite speakers that have a lower frequency range of 80 Hz, and your Sub crossover is set by the receiver at 60 Hz.....you will have a gap in your sound field. You will miss the sound between the 60Hz and 80 Hz range. You would have to set the Sub at 100Hz so no Bass sound  will  be lost. Set your Sub crossover higher than your other speaker's lowest  Hz level, so they don't have to work as hard on the lower end.....thats the Subs job. Also check to see if your receiver is set for minus Db's for your sub setting as this will cut your Sub volume.

But remember that when you use the crossover of the receiver, you should set the internal crossover of the subwoofer has high as possible.
