Yeah we've definitely touched on that subject before. Every year there's often a picture (or a whole bunch) that was taken with a throw-away that makes it into the runnings for a Pulitzer.

It's all about what the photographer sees!

The star shaped lights generally end up like that with the long exposures.

The star-shapped light are usually created using a longexp at very high F values. Try a long exp on F2.8 and another at F11, you'll see a difference

Outside my house. XTi with a Sigma 18-200 OS, Merkury Optics UV filter (worthless garbage), a terrible (competitor) tripod from a million years ago, and maybe a Speedlite 380EX with paper to diffuse. (Don't remember if I used it on that shot)
