I started a thread back about the 8830 World Phone to be used in Hong Kong/China (http://www.futureshopforums.ca/t5/Communications/T
So, which would be the better phone to travel with?
- Does Hong Kong, Shanghai (China), and Zhongshan (China) have HSPA?
- Does the Asian HSPA work with a North American issued Bold 9700? Is it as easy as swapping out a SIM card?

Apparently the rumor is that there are two issues of 9700bold. Apparently the 9700 bolds from Windmobile are only 2G???? And everyone else's are 2G & 3G!
2G as in gsm an 3G as in hspa.

The Bold 9700 will work in regions with GSM service, however, in some areas of China, they only have CDMA and in this case, your best bet is the 8830. I don't know which specific areas have what though. Generally speaking though, most well populated areas of China supposedly have GSM capabilities, so the Bold 9700 should work fine in those places.
Now then, if you want to use SIM cards over there, you will need to unlock your Bold 9700. Most World Edition 8830s came GSM unlocked (so you could use a SIM card from anywhere), but the Bold 9700 is typically locked to a specific carrier. It isn't hard to get them unlocked though. Depending on who your carrier is, you may be able to get an unlock code from them, or you can purchase an unlock code from a 3rd party (if you'd like more info on this, send me a PM).
One other thing. If you unlock your phone and use a different SIM card, don't forget that your phone number is tied to the SIM card, not your phone, so you'll have a different phone number every time you change your SIM card. In addition, while I haven't tried it yet myself, you likely will not get BlackBerry data access. If the plan you get there includes data, you may be able to access the WAP browser, but you more than likely will not get the full BlackBerry service. That's because the phone has to access your BIS/BES account which is tied to the carrier you're on now. Now then, I could be wrong, or maybe you'll get lucky, but...

OK, I finally made my trip to China and HKG. I decided to bring both phones and felt it was time to update this thread. Thanks to everyone's advice and the heads up on getting the phones unlocked prior to the trip.
In summary, China Mobile in both Kowloon and Zhongshan have been great. Their offices had SIM cards for me to test prior to the purchase. Their knowledge on the 9700 isn't perfect, but was the most helpful. They also allowed me to combine phone and data services. A HKG$78 unlimited monthly data plan was perfect. I only wish it was 3G instead of 2G.
Other cell carriers insisted on me getting 2 SIM cards. One for voice and another for my data. I got suckered when I couldn't initally find a China Mobile service in Chai Wan. Good thing I brought both phones.
Thanks for the heads up that my Blackberry email service wasn't available, but the data allowed me to access emails via webmail on the browser. I am even able to read and post comments here in the Future Shop Forums.
I had some troubles dialing out at first, then I discovered the country code option. Once I did that, local China calls didn't go into long distance mode.
Now crossing my fingers the Telus phones work again when I'm back in Canada.

OK, back home now.... replaced my SIM card and the only hiccup was needing to go Options, Phone Options, Smart Dialing, and change the Country Code back to Canada. Yes, I also needed to change to setting to "China" when travelling, otherwise the 9700 would try to add long distance prefixes.
The only other thing I should add that some HKG sellers wanted me to find and change the APN setting. China Mobile didn't ask for it. That is Options, Advanced Options, TCP/IP.
Do others need to find and change the APN setting when using SIM cards from other countries?

That can be necessary for your data to work correctly. Each carrier uses their own APN settings which can affect your ability to use things like MMS, certain apps, etc.

2G as in gsm an 3G as in hspa.
The 9700 Bold model that Wind carries does not have the 850/1900 UTMS bands that Rogers/Bell/Telus use. Hence the Wind 9700 will only get 2G if you put in Rogers or Fido SIM card, and no services at all for Bell and Telus because they do not have GSM fall back.
On the other hand, the Wind 9700 does have 2100 UTMS band, so it will operate at locations that use 2100, which includes Hong Kong and most of Europe.

Sometimes the APN setting is embedded within the SIM and gets picked up automatically when the phone is powered up for the first time. (For example, Chatr SIMs have Rogers APN settings embedded, even though Chatr does not provide data services at the moment.) Others providers may not embed APN settings in the SIM, so you will have to manually enter it within the phone settings.
