great question....
Future Shop just changed recently our warranty options for customers on cell phones.
We now offer what is called PEP Product Exchange Plan
That is right.. if you have a functionality issue, non working phone - we will at the store give you a brand new phone over the counter exchange ... now obviously this does not include physical/accidental damage or water damage.... but if your phone does not work properly, we give you a new one.... no refurb..no downtime...just great customer service........ at the same time, we also will give you a battery replacement!... just one!... but, wow!!!! a battery - consumable is covered under our PEP... works a bit different, you call a 1800 number that we provide, you put your old one in the box that they send with the new one in it - we pay the shipping .......... oh yeah!... when we do your over the counter exchange on your phone, we will also transfer your contacts over to the new phone!!.. (provided your old phone at least has a charge/power)........
Now, all this is not free... but phones are only $4.99 a month, and smarts phones are $9.99 a month.... 2 years or 3 years options... I like to think of it as just part of my monthly phone plan..... totally worth it since your phone is probably the most important, most used electronics device that you own, and carry with you everywhere...!
hope that helps!

Great info Craig, thanks very much!
If it was $5/month for a smart phone, I'd take it in a minute. Not sure about $10/month, but I'll certainly consider it. Definitely gets rid of any worry.

give it some thought... first run new technology in my opinion it is worth considering (as you have)... perhaps when you probe buying it, talk to the cell expert or use this forum that can maybe shave $5 off your monthly plan somehow that fits your needs ... and it will be like getting the PEP at $4.99 a month! ... for instance I know Telus TODAY has changed a lot of things......
if you dont mind, if you let me know what carrier are you with now, and what are you paying a month / plan & features... maybe I can help...?

A week ago I picked up my storm from future shop and of course this time of year the place was a zoo so I told the person I dealt with to go and make some money and I would come back in to talk about this new PEP option. I'm sure all employees hear that old 'I'll come back and buy it' line a lot but I usually do. So I just want to clarify......I pay $10 a month and if my storm stops working I go to future shop and they give me a new a one, other then physical and water damage of course. Is that it? is it that simple?
How do I pay the $10 a month?? on my cell bill or does future shop invoice me??
Thanks.

This is interesting... but I think I preferred the $120 I paid up front for a 3 year extended warranty, which also acts exactly the same as a Product Exchange/Replacement Plan (we already replaced my first Storm due to a camera issue - the second one is great!). Over the course of 3 years, the PEP that Future Shop is offering would come to $360 for an extended warranty at $10/month... Yikes!
Any chance that info is incorrect?

What I really love about the PEP ( Product exchange plan ) is that is covers you’re battery which is categorized as an consumable product , and most warranties do not cover for the full length of the phone but only within the year. With the pep we allow you to exchange the battery with an easy phone call to the 1800 number provided with the purchased. This option is actually the only way for the battery to be replaced with a brand new unit with full capacity. Since we need a huge warehouse to store all models of cell phones batteries we do not carry them in store. The box is shipped to your address once the box arrived we will need to obtain the old unit and once shipped to the warehouse we will deliver you the new unit within 3 business days. (Of course all shipping expenses is paid via the plan) Batteries do retail over 50$ for certain models and goes beyond who knows….
To answer your question exactly Krypto and to clarify a few details which are not very clear, the pep is paid via Amex, Visa or MasterCard, more alternative is in review for example the Futureshop card and the lump sum post paid option which are actually being revised, this program is new and a few tweaks are being done to provide as many options possible. To correct the post above the pep are actually divided in two categories Non-Data phones and Data applicable phones ( most Smartphone’s are categorized in this section)
4.99 and 9.99 billed on your Credit card statement, available on an 2 years or 3 years agreement.
To justify the price I will just compare the Product service plan (PSP), the Product replacement plan (PRP) on prepaid phones advantages, these were used before new program was set in early October.
The PSP on a phone for example was 119.99 $ for a 2 year period. The Psp could be used for accessories which were part of the plan for examples hear phones or chargers. If the phone does lose performance i.e. a software issues occurs on the phones like the Sony walkman series (the white screen of death i.e. not working just goes white and nothing happen) we would send in the phone at the repair center or Sony directly this concludes loss of your cell phone for a period of 2-6 weeks . The Pep is a direct exchange at the counter. No wait time for repair, brand new unit. As for the psp on the phone if we concluded the phone was not redeemed as repairable you would get a new phone after the faxed report of the repair center at the store location. But once you obtain an exchange for a new product your extended warranty does expired since you’ve obtained a brand new unit whereas the PEP remains in effect for the lengths of your agreement you’ve chosen. (You have 10 exchanges possible for an new cell phone unit with the pep program and once for the battery)
Theses are a few advantages over the regular psp, no cellphone loss, exchange at the counter, no repair waiting time, low cost, if possible contact will transferred if main unit is still functional and if you’ve got a CDMA phone ( virgin, telus, bell) The pep program does even cover the ESN change fee which is 35$ per phone changed.

Hey TomManoma, thanks for adding a few details... and while I really hate to say it, I've seen the same sorts of warranties for less (again, my warranty covers all the same, including product replacement (not repair), battery replacement, don't have to pay for the handset swap, and I even get a discount on accessories on my phone). I guess I'm just a bit surprised... perhaps this new PEP is the future of extended warranties for cell phones, or perhaps it'll be a bust and Future Shop will have to begin matching what other companies are providing.
Anyhow, thanks a lot again for adding the details. I really do hope Future Shop rethinks this whole PEP however, as I don't want to see Future Shop lose out on any potential sales as a result.

I bought an HTC Touch in December 07 and was pressured into buying additional 3 yr Future Shop warranty because I was told that Manufacturer's warranty is limited whereas the additional Future Shop warranty is "bumper to bumper", which covers me everywhere that the manufacturer doesn't over the 3 years. I gave in and bought the warranty for an additional $99. Here I am 15 months later trying to use my warranty and I'm told that the phone needs to be sent in for repair and it takes 4-6 weeks and I'll be left without a phone for that period of time.
When they sold me "bumper to bumper" warranty for my car, they covered me with a loaner vehicle when my car is in for servicing/repairs. I am very disappointed. Salesman was quick to point out the flaws in the manufacturer's warranty. I wish they had also pointed out flaws in the Future Shop warranty and told me about this.
