Which OS for Storm

If you have registered with RIM, you would have received notification of an update to version 122. I have for a couple of weeks and version 122 is a significant improvement over version 76.

Cheers!

But alas, that's only for Bell Storm users!  Telus is still holding out at this point in time.  (I'm using .122 on my Telus Storm regardless though :smileyhappy:).

Storm OS

I am registered with RIM and Telus in my service provider. Only Bell has updated theirs to .122 via RIM website.

Did receive a call again from Telus area code 514 so thats Montreal. Once again they were trying to assure me that the update shouldn't be long though no date (didn't expect them to) OR version they are testing. Maybe one up from Bells' .122, anybody's guess.

So, we'll see if Telus comes through. I have had similar experienced  with my previous Motorola cell phone, promises were made for OS update and some Utilities, 4 years go by, received 1 update no Utilities.

Which OS for Storm

Okay,

Had no idea this release depended on service provider's policy. I thought it came from BlackBerry direct. After over 20 years with another service provider with the letter R, I went over to B as they did not have BlackBerry Storm in their offering.

Storm OS

OS are customized by service provider and I probably wouldn't be surprised that Telus's OS be a different version than .122, always trying to better than rival, correct? Make sense, doesn't it?

Just hope that Telus gets it tested and ready for end-user soon.

Actually, the OSes are not carrier branded.  So long as you delete the Vendor.xml file, you can load the Bell .122 OS on your Telus Storm with absolutely no problem (I know as I've done this).  The problem is that because the OS is not officially supported by Telus, if you install it on a Telus phone, they may make you revert back to the official release before giving warranty service and support.

Where the difference does come though is that each carrier has different testing requriements - because a lot of Telus customers are actually business clients, they need to be certain that the OS is going to work with BES systems as well as BIS, plus they need to ensure that it works with various carrier specific apps (e.g. Telus Radio, Telus Mobile TV, etc).  They also need to ensure that the OS will work smoothly with the network (of course, because Telus and Bell share networks, this isn't as big a deal).

Storm OS

Thats exactly what I meant as Telco specific meaning having it to work in this case Telus specific Apps the ones you mentioned. I presume also that if one were to download Bell's after deleting .xml on Telus smartphone the same Apps would not work?

Which OS for Storm

Noticeable improvements are:

1) Battery life,

2) Voice dial,

I haven't notice much else that needs improvements. With typing accuracies, once you got use to the sure type or qwerty, it works fine. With 122, they have added a third option.

GPS and Google Map works great! Plenty good enough for me which is not good for Garmin as I was thinking of shelling out about $70 bucks for the Garmin GPS app.

To be honest, I don't actually have an Telus specific apps, but from what others are saying, they don't have any issues. :smileyhappy:

But here's a great little post from over on the BlackBerryForums that explains what the vendor.xml file looks like:

Every device has a hard-coded vendor ID for it, depending on which carrier released the device. As mentioned, T-Mobile US is 100, Cingular Blue/AT&T Wireless is 101, Cingular Orange is 102, etc. The Vendor.xml file has entries for the vendor ID (in hex format, so 0x64 is equal to 100, which is T-Mobile). Beneath every vendor entry are entries for the various release (not applications) version of OS they have issued. These release versions are tied to a hardware ID number/string that can be referenced to a coinciding device in the Device.xml file.

Amongst other logical purposes for disallowing unwitting users from loading 'non-supported' software releases from other carriers, it can also be referenced to look at what newer versions of the OS are out there, as well. Sometimes, such as the case with a lot of the 8100 releases, there has been an 'empty' Vendor.xml file, which would need to be deleted by everyone in order to load the OS (rather than just someone from one carrier trying to load a release from another carrier).

There isn't really any specific info there related to any apps - so your Telus apps should still work just fine! :smileyhappy:

Great little summary.  It's also faster than .75 - both the camera and the browser are significantly improved :smileyhappy:.  I also love the full portrait keyboard.  Works just perfectly if you've got small fingers :smileytongue:.  Other improvements include memory - I went from the 30-35MB range to close to 50MB with .122 (leaves more room for apps), although I've still noticed a memory leak - I'm not sure why though as others have actually stated very positive results with nearly no memory leak on their phones. :smileyhappy:
