An update on linking permissions

by Administrator on 03-03-2009 02:52 PM - last edited on 10-31-2011 11:55 AM

There was a time in our community, not all that long ago, when you could only link to a futureshop.ca page and nowhere else.  We've come a long way and in an effort to allow for even more sharing, we're opening up the linking permissions even more.

Going forward, here's what is not allowed:

  • offensive material (obviously)
  • spam or pages that would otherwise violate the Community Guidelines
  • direct competitors
  • commerce-enabled pages (on manufacturers' sites)

Everything else that is relevant to the coversation - including other forums, blogs and info that can be found on manufacturers' sites - is fair game.  Hopefully this will help to make sharing information and ideas in the Community even easier!

Instead of banning references to competitors, wouldn't it make more sense for you to just beat them on price, service, and support, so references don't matter?  In the Internet age, we're all comparing prices and horror stories in other forums anyway, so trying to ban references in competitors here is like closing the gate once the horses have escaped.

I don't think you should be congratulated for ending a practice you shouldn't have had in the first place .

Actually, this does make sense... if competitors can be listed then we'd be saving people the effort of finding the deals, and sorry, but if you want a good deal, I think you need to work a bit for it. Besides, that might just turn the forums into a "Where's the best deal on this so I can get Future Shop to price match" thing, and that is counter productive. There are already other forums out there that do this, so it makes sense to focus on Future Shop and related technology here, not what other places are doing.

Just my two cents! :smileyhappy:

That, and we'd probably get in trouble if someone posted, "Oh, this competitor is selling this product at this really dirt cheap price!" and then someone goes to that competitor only to find that the price is twice what was said on the forum. One, I'd hate to be the poor salesguy who has to tell the customer they're wrong (or sell something at a stupid low price), two, it's not fair to the customer who goes and follows the misinformation... and there's probably legal implications to advertising competitor products and prices here.
