Travel Converter Help - Traveling to Korea.

I'm going to be traveling to Korea for a few months, and I need an wall outlet converter for my laptop, camera, and cell phone. I've looked through the converters on Futureshop.ca, but I'm not sure if they will work in Korea. Is anyone able to recommend one that I can buy?

Thanks in advance for your help!

OK a few thoughts....

  • there are converters and there are adapters. Converters will step down the voltage to a safe level for devices that can't handle the higher voltage.  Adapters allow you to fit the outlet.
  • Check the voltage adapters. Some will be limited to 110 or 120. While others are rated for 200 to 240.  If your device can handle the higher voltage, you just need the adapter.
  • I found this image on the internet.  Instead of "blades", Korea uses circular prongs.  Sadly it appears the circular prongs can be of different diameters.
  • do you plan to charge all your devices at the same time?  You may wish to purchase a few extra adapters for the devices that don't need the converter.
  • does your hotel or shelter have enough outlets for your creature comforts to be charged together?  Have you considered a universal power bar?  This came in handy for me as I needed just one adapter for all my devices.

This is a special niche item that won't be available at Future Shop.  You need to go to a dedicated travel store to find such an item.

Re: Travel Converter Help - Traveling to Korea.

Thank you so much for the thorough response, XL!

I didn't know about the universal power bar, but now I'm seriously consider buying it because it's going to provide great convenience for charging all my devices at the same time!

I checked the voltage on my cell phone and laptop, and they seem to be able to handle 100/240V, so I think I will need the adaptor only?

Thanks again, XL!

Re: Travel Converter Help => Power bars/strips

A few decades ago, people would only be concerned about a travel hair dryer or an iron... Not anymore, people want their creature comforts. In addition to the devices you listed.... GPS's, flashlights, cellphone, cameras, camera flashes and any backup/redundant devices also need to be charged. If you are sharing a room with a travel partner.... will they need outlets as well? There are times I need 2 power bars...

Power bars do take up luggage space, but it means I don't spend my waking hours waiting to charge one device after another. I also don't need to wake up at the middle the night to change devices either.

You can get a power bars in Korea, but I don't know if it will take your North American blade plugs. Getting one here means less stress in your travels. Remember, I'm not suggesting regular 120v power bars, you need the ones that can handle the voltage and will accept the blade plugs of your devices.

Re: Travel Converter Help => Power bars/strips

Yah, it's crazy how many things I have that needs charging these days!

I'll probably need to share a dorm with a roommate, therefore the power bar is definitely a good investment so I don't have to experience in any of the unpleasant situations you mentioned above XD

I'll make sure the voltages on the power bar will work for Korea before making a purchase.

Thanks XL! You've provided wonderful help! =)
