6770 displays as 5700 series

[ Edited ]

i have the gateway fx 6850 47cu with a 6770 graphics card, it says i have a 6770 on the box and on the sticker on the side of the computer, but on catalyst control center, windows display properties it says i have an 5700 series. it thought it was just a name mix up but i get lower gpu clock and memmory clock and i only have 73 gigabytes of bandwidth while the 6770 suposed to have 130 gigabytes of bandwidth. my catalyst control center said i had a 6770 when i had windows 7 home premium but when i upgraded to windows 7 ultimate, my gatway programs disapeard and it said 5700 series. i have maid recovery discs for my apps, what do i do?

The first thing I'd suggest is to uninstall the Catalyst Control Center, then download the latest version of the CCC, as well as the 6770's drivers from ATI's website, and see if that resolves your problem.

when i try to install the newer version it says the ini file is not found. but now it is 5770 instead of 5700 series. do you think futureshop **Bleep** me off or made a mistake. i dont think so because it was working wit home premium but when i upgraded it to windows 7 ultimate using the legit box, the problem appeared.

For the most part a 6770 IS a 5770

with a few minor details

1 there are 2 flavours of 6770

6770 (OEM) & 6770

the OEM one has the same specs as the 5770

lets compair

6770:

Terascale 2 Unified Processing Architecture

720 Stream Processors

36 Texture Units

64 Z/Stencil ROP Units

16 Color ROP Units

6770 OEM:

76.8 GBs/ Memory Bandwidth (maximum)

Terascale 2 Unified Processing architecture

800 stream processors

40 texture units

64 Z/Stencil ROP Units

16 Color ROP Units

with a 5770

Terascale 2 Unified Processing architecture

800 stream processors

40 texture units

64 Z/Stencil ROP Units

16 Color ROP Units

now the 6770 is based on the 5700 series and i should also make note that AMD calls attention to this fact here:

"Based on the same hardware as the ATI Radeon™ HD 5700 Series, be ready for the hottest DirectX® 11-capable games with an award-winning architecture" AMD product description

Now because your graphics card came with the gateway I am willing to guess that you have the OEM version (as gateway is an OEM) another way to check though is to download GPU-z http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ and run it. It will hopefully detail the specs properly.

the only other difference between the 6770 OEM and the 5770 COULD be clockspeeds (due to the technology maturing manufacturers sometimes can boost clockspeeds in thier products. Even then performance wise will still likely be within 5% of the 5770

I should point out that the reason why the 6770 exists is what would have been the 6770 ended up being the 6870 due to it performing so well (and what should have been the 6870 ended up the 6970) which left a "hole" in the lineup. OEMs (like gateway) don't like it when there are "holes"  which is likely why AMD renamed the card. Sometimes due to the tech maturing the company increases clockspeeds, etc.

I should also point out that AMD is not the only company to do this:

As nVidia did this with one of thier 8800 (not sure which one) series cards (became a 9800 which in turn became a GTS 250)

Re: 6770 displays as 5700 series

sapphire is known as an AIB...

however the only 6770 they offer with the 720 stream processors is called the SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 6750 1GB GDDR5

http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&leg=&psn=000101&gid=3&sgid=1073

another way to check is to look at your GPU-z screenshot beside the shaders there is a number... is it 800 or 720?

if its 800 then you have the better model... regardless of if its a 5770 or a 6770

i've uploaded my gpu-z shot with the item circled to help you out... that screen shot can be a bit confusing :smileyhappy:
