Electronics Environmental Fees coming Apr 1 in Ontario?

Have anyone heard about this?  It was bought to my attention but I have heard virtually nothing in the media.

Um...weve had electronics environmental fees here in Saskatchewan for quite a while already.  Its more of a disposal deposit...only you don't get the deposit back!

Watch out, those iMacs will run up a $20-25 fee.

That is very weird. I haven't heard anything about that either.

As the article states, everything seems to be very vague. Eg. Does this fee apply to refurbished items?

Well, at least minimum wage is going up.

This fee may differ from province to province, but I think that refurbished products are included in this legislation.  Apparently a few provinces have these fees already in action.

Yep, this is definitely in effect in Ontario now. You'll see the new Environmental Handling Fee on your Future Shop receipt as "ON EHF" followed by whatever it is you bought that's covered by the program. If you bought a laptop, it'll show up as "ON EHF PORTABLE."

You can find local electronics and hazardous disposal sites on http://dowhatyoucan.ca/

[ Edited ]

jshebib, the 'Environmental Handling Fee' was introduced to Ontario last year, and is still in effect. The 'Eco fee' which was introduced this year was quickly scrapped for the reasons you noted. The two fees are different, and the first is still going strong.
