How do you preserve a laptop battery ?

I recently just purchased an HP DV6-2154CA laptop and I am enjoying it a great deal. I don't really use my battery, but I want to know how to take care of it. Should I be using it once and a while just to keep the integrity of it high, or should I take it out completley and put it somewhere safe, or should I just keep it in and forget about it ? My manual said it would tell me this but I havn't been able to find the answer.  Also any tips for keeping my laptop in good order would be appreciated. P.S : Is a faint clicking noise normal in laptops. It's not very loud and you almost have to put your ear up to it to notice it. It clicks once every minute or two. You can't notice it unless you arn't doing anything with it. The guy at Futurshop said it was normal, just the hard drive and that all laptops do that. Sounded like the truth, and it does make sense that there would be some other sound than the fan.

It is a good practice to charge the battery completely and then fully run it down on a regular basis. Personally I plug my laptop in during the morning then mid-day unplug it and run it down completely. This works for me, but I can't say it will work for you since I don't know your computing habits.

If you place the laptop on a desk feel free to remove the battery completely, but know if that power-cord pops out you run the risk of losing your work in progress.

I hope you are enjoying your new PC. Here are some other TIPS for getting more battery life.

Yep, I recommend you cycle the battery (drain + recharge) once a week to keep it in good health.  If you cycle your battery too much (like every day) it wears out.  On the other hand if you never drain your battery it wears out and loses capacity too.  Like I always say, batteries will wear out either way, its kind of depressing!
