Hi guys!

A colleague of mine approached me and asked if I could suggest a good laptop for him at around a $300 price point (before taxes/extra warranties).  He's not looking for anything specific, and does simple web browsing, email, etc.  You know, your average, basic user.  I'm really swamped at work and don't have a whole lot of time to look into this, and I was just wondeirng if any of you had any suggestions you could offer.  I'm only looking at Future Shop to start, and if there is nothing acceptable there, then I will branch out.

I saw a few models at that price point but they are refurbs or clearance models.  Is he okay for models like these?

• Does he have a laptop now?  What is the problem with it?
• Be careful with the netbook. The small screen means a lot of scrolling for web browsing.  Startup time may be too slow and money wasted.
• If performance is an issue for old laptop, new laptop or netbook....  consider Ubuntu.
