Please help!

Hi there,

I have a WD Passport 500Gb that was bought last year 2011 in Singapore. Have lots of stuff there from year 2009 till 2011 and unfortunately it cant be opened anymore, my computer (windows vista) says the ONE OF THE USB DEVICES ATTACHED TO THIS COMPUTER HAS MALFUNCTIONED AND WINDOWS CAN NOT RECOGNIZE IT.  Im thinking of buying another external hard disk on your store, doubting if I can ever trust WD products again. But my main concern before buying another external hard dissk is my FILES in that WD Passport. Can they be retrieve? I checked if they have a WD has a service center here in Ontario Canada and was unclear how. I really dont know what to do, please help.. :smileysad:

Re: Please help!

I would ask what happens if you plugged the drive into a second computer? Do you get the same error message? Can you retrieve your data off there?

Last resort is an expensive trip to a data recovery house.

Sadly hard drives can fail as well as optical media over time.

Re: Please help!

If it doesn't work on a different computer then it may be the enclosure and not the hard drive that has the problem. Getting a new USB enclosure could fix that and let you continue using your existing drive with all the data fully intact. This would void any possible warranty on the drive though, but so would attempting to retrieve the files off of it if it doesn't work on another computer.

Re: Please help!

hi there, thanks for helping me out. i was dusting on my table and all of my gadgets are off.. but thank you for reminding me about static and power surges! by the way, i figured out already that the USB cord of my WD is the one that is broken. I tried my WD in another computer using its original usb cord but it wasnt still working., Godd thing I happened to see a another usb cord beside and tried it. IT WORKED! was able to open it. So, unfortunately WD USB CORD are easily busted. Thanks for the help by the way! :smileyhappy:
