If you're genuinely intrigued by Macs, maybe a quick trip to the Apple website might give you the justification you're looking for. Personally I find it hard to suggest Macs.

If you're a web designer, a photographer or perhaps a musician then a Mac might be useful for you.
Otherwise it's just an overpriced PC with a different operating system, if you're really that bothered about windows then you could always install Linux Ubuntu or Fedora.
That's just my honest opinion thou.

There are a few points on when I can suggest a mac.
- you are a student
- you are a rich student with dough to burn
- apple has a history of good warranty service
- you are a mac person (a person that just plain likes to be seen with a mac also)
- you require a computer screen with precise screen colour calibration (maybe?)
- you do not require the compatibility of the enormous amount of 3rd party software

There are a few points on when I can suggest a Mac:
1. You have more money than sense
2. You love enormous trackpads
3. You must have 7 hr battery life
But you know what. I suggest you hold off just a bit longer because Macbooks are due for a refresh with new processors any time now.

As you can see, this is a hotly contested topic.
Ultimately, the decision to buy a Windows based PC or a Mac comes down to a few things.
- Cost (Windows PCs are typically cheaper, although some can be just as expensive as Macs)
- Program compatibility (do you have lots of Windows based programs or do you have access to Mac based programs)
- What you intend to use it for - Macs traditionally have the photography, videography and music markets while Windows PCs usually have the gaming and general usage markets. But the lines are starting to blur here.
- Customer service - this is regardless of which computer you buy, you want a company that is willing to stand behind their products. Apple supposedly does a decent job of that (although I have started hearing some not so pleasant experiences)
- User preference
The last point may actually be the most important. Apple computers (Macs) use a different operating system than Windows based computers and ultimately a big part of your decision needs to come down to which OS you prefer. If you've never used a Mac before, be sure to try it out first. While many people like the user interface and thus become loyal Mac users, many (like myself) don't.

The reason to get a Mac is simple. They make the best notebooks and desktop computers, hands down. Just look at the latest reports from Consumer Reports where they looked at laptops and desktops. Apple computers owned every category, and by quite a margin. They also looked at customer service and Apple was number 1 by far. If you actually do some research and look into Mac's, you'll see that they are the superior computer. I've always used PC's but I am going to make the switch to a MacBook Pro as soon as they refreshed models are out. I can't wait.
Oh, and cnet.com also ranks Apple computers very highly. Although it is a different operating system, it is easier to use, more intuitive and you don't have to worry about viruses like you do with a PC. The question should really be, why shouldn't you buy a Mac?

For full-disclosure of what you might be getting into, I think it is once again appropriate to post one of my all-time favorite pictures. This one never gets old ![]()

Got one obvious answer for that one: Because they're very expensive!
I'm not even talking about the fact that it's worth it or not, just that you need a lot of money for a Mac (or any other apple products).
If your budget is unlimited, then a Mac is a pretty good computer but if you don't have that much to spend, you'll get a lot more with a PC.
