I keep my laptop turned on for long periods, often overnight or for two days. I've been told to remove the battery to prevent the power cord from being damaged.
What would be the proper way to maintain my laptop and the battery if I keep it always turned on on my desktop?

If you rarely move your laptop around, just take the battery out. This prevents permature aging of the battery, nothing much else.
I personally do a lot of battery swaps while the computer is on... so I don't think it will damage it. When I need to move my laptop, I just stick the battery in (while the computer is on), and voila, I can unplug and move without disrupting my usage.
Another good thing to note is to keep the desk area clean of dirt/dust. It would all get sucked into the computer...
