LG HDD/DVD RECORDER

My dvd recorder is saying "unknown disc" whenever I try to play a dvd.  Yesterday I rented 2dvds and it would not play ithem and today I tried to play a dvd that I had just bought and had never played before.  However, it will play older dvd's that I have in my collection.  Any suggestions?  My recorder is 7 months old.

So what exactly are you saying ?I think you may have misunderstood what your dvd player does ?

Its a DVD recorder that records to HDD ? " HDD being Hard Disk Drive" its not really an HD-DVD player. Hence it not playing HD-DVDs... I hope that helps, if not , post the model of your LG player and that will help out a bit more :smileyhappy: but judging by the age of it, its defiantly not an HD-DVD player.

HDD/DVD RECORDER

It's an LG HDD/DVD recorder, model LRH-780,  It records to Hard Disk Drive or DVD.  I have never had a problem playing DVD's before.  It will still play my older DVDs (Pirates of the Carribean Dead Man's Chest is one I bought a few months ago and it will play that and also others I bought before that.  Last Tuesday I rented a DVD and it wouldn't play it (I tried two different DVDs). I just bought a DVD and it played once and then when I tried the next day to play it again I got the "unknown disc" message.

Mine too.

I've got a LG LRH-790 and it's doing the same thing Timber's is. I called LG and they told me to take it in for repair. I called the shop and they told me that some times it's because of the dry air and it builds up static and to remove the power plug and hold onto the plug prongs for 10 seconds to discharge the machine and then try it again. Put in an older movie, "The Incredibles" and it worked fine. Tried a brand new disk right out of the box "Wild Hogs", rejected the disk and said "Unkown disk". Tried another new disk out the box same thing. Unplugged, discharged, plugged in blah, blah blah. Nothing different. Old disk that have played before, sometimes works, some times freezes in the middle. Taking it in tomorrow. I have read that there is sometimes firmware upgrades done? Anyone else? Sounds like a commnon problem. You get yours fixed yet Timber?

Unknown disk - LG LRH-780

Same problem. The unit doesn't even recognize disks it initialized. It says ''no disc''. When you unplug it for 10 seconds, the programs recorded on the HDD stay there, right. I'll try that; otherwise, I'll bring it in for repairs. Do you bring it to Futureshop?

Unknown disk - LG LRH-780

Same problem here!
I bought the LG LRH 790 at Futureshop and, after 6 month  of use, I started to get the "Unknown Disk" message. I called LG Canada for several times and they also told me to do silly things like "you have to clean up your disk..." or "unplug and plug again after 10 mins.." etc, but the issue was getting worse until it finally couldn't read or write any DVD format.  I called LG again and they gave me a repair centre address in Mississauga.  Technicians told me that the motherboard and Optical Drive have to be changed to a total cost of $ 625 !!!  I called back LG to ask them to honor the warranty but they refused it arguing that the device got the repair centre 2 months after warranty expired. They never cared I was dealing the issue with them by phone  months before the warranty expired.  Now that I see here and in other forums a lot of customers with the same issue, It seems to me like LG were procastinating to send me to the repair centre until the warranty expired.  Life is NOT Good at home because of this 1 year life-expectancy DVD/HDD appliance.

Timber, endelgel or vladimir1959, plz let me know how you get this issue solved. I'd appreciate it.

Thanks a lot

LG HDD DVD Recorder - 780

I bought my unit in Oct. 2006.  I have the same problem in terms of the unit not recognizing discs that were not recorder on the unit or have never been played succsfully on the unit before.  I have an extended warranty so I brought the unit in for service today.  I explained the problem to the customer service rep (seemed to be clueless about my explanation) and I wrote out a brief synopis.  I was told the unit will be sent for service but the turn around time is 60 days! Although it could come back sooner.  I have to say I am a bit sceptical that the problem will be fixed.  I plan to bring a bunch of DVDs when I pick up the unit so I can test it prior to leaving the store.  In a best case scenario based on customer feedback on this unit Future Shop would know about the problem and be able to fix it or replace the unit.  I will let you know what happens and if anyone has already been down this road let us know.

Try picking up a dvd cleaning disk. They go for approx $1...

Try picking up a dvd cleaning disk. They go for approx $18. It is entirley possible that the lens is dirty, run it three times. This may fix the problem you are having.

DVD Player Cleaning Disk

Thanks MasterTech.  When I get my unit back hopefully fixed.  I will try to find out if that was the problem.  I will say though that I have a Samsung DVD Player that is 3 - 1/2 years old and I have never had to clean the player as a result of poor picture quality, freezing, not recognizing disks and so on.  I would be interested to know if your suggestion works for others owners of the LG unit who are experiencing the problem as dscribed on this forum.

If any one tries MasterTech suggestion and it works please let the forum know.

Thx Again MasterTech

LG Recorder not able to be Fixed

I just got a call from Future Shop. They stated that they can not fix my unit and will be providing me with a new one.  I hope it is not another LG DVD Recorder.  I will never buy this brand again.
