Hi, I started looking online for any information about our HDD/DVD Recorder, LG Model LRH-890. I came across these queries, describing the same issues. Our 890, does the same thing. In addition, when it finishes timer recording it sometimes hangs on the write to HDD message and does not shut off. It will stay running with this message on the front of the recorder until you turn it off manually, five days is the longest, so far.
Our recorder is two years old. When I tried to contact LG via the web they evenyually sent me a phone number for repair service depots. Sounds like LG has a lemmon in this line of recorders, one which they do not want to assume responsibilites. I am sure glad our recent upgrade of equipement DID NOT include any LG products. Once this recorder completely fails, we will not be looking at LG products, to replace it.

Hi folks,
I've had my LG PVR for 3 years and just started to experience the problems with initializing disks, writing new content, etc.
Regular DVDs are fine, it's the Dual Layer that are a problem.
However the Dual Layer Disks give you the ability to save a movie with the best quality format.
I pulled the PVR apart and discovered that the DVD writer is a regular IDE DVD drive that you'll find in most computers. Although it has been fitted within a special package to allow it to pass the DVD media through the front bezel of the PVR.
So, I started to pull working DVDs from my various comuters around the house and discovered that they were not all working as well ! It seems that the dual layer function doesn't last very long in any drive.
I did find a Hitachi / LG DVD writer that does work well with the PVR.
I can initialize, Dub movies to a DL Disk, and close the session, no problem.
Now, for the tough question, what to do with the drive since it won't fit properly within the PVR ?
I cut a hole in the top using a Dremel and passed the wires up through the top. I needed a power cable extender, but that was it.
For the cost of a $ 30.00 DVD drive, I now have a working system.
It looks like a Frankenstien and has a couple of quirks, but at least it functions.
If you want to try this, I'd recommed that you unplug the unit to avoid shorting anything out, and find yourself a Hitachi LG drive.
Good Luck !

I've had my LG LRH-780 recorder for about 3½ years. I've been having some trouble getting the DVDs in the recorder to recognize (but for some reason, it still recognizes music CDs). Any possible solutions please?
EDIT: My recorder also manages to recognize DVD-RAM discs for some strange reason. (I do own a double-sided DVD-RAM disc.)
ANOTHER EDIT: Because of that one DVD-RAM disc I have, I was able to use some of the existing software on my computer to make regular discs out of the recordings I have. But I'd still love to find out a good solution to make sure the DVD portion is restored to normal.

Can you provide details of the Hitachi/LG drive you found?
I looked inside the box and although the drive inside the 880 is a standard size, the connector is not a regular IDE...
