Laptop LCD Damaged by Cold? Warranty?

I bought my daughter a laptop at future shop. At the time I was convinced to buy the extended warranty, after initially declining, because the salesman indicated that it would cover everything (he even said "like if your daughter drops it, or spills coffe on it").
My daughter lives in a cold part of Alberta.
My daughter came to visit me, and showed me that the LCD screen on her laptop was not functioning properly. There is a blotch on it, covering 75% of the screen. She has no idea how it happened, as there was no precipitating event.
My wife brought the laptop in to future shop, and was told that the damage wasn't covered under the warranty. She wasn't told why. Instead, they wan't to charge me nearly the price of a new laptop to fix the screen.
Looking online, I see that it may be possible that cold temperatures could damage an lcd screen. Is it possible that the laptop was damaged by my daughter carrying it to school in very cold weather?
If so, (or even if not), is anyone aware of a reason why warranty coverage would be denied?
I feel like I'm being taken for a ride. I've played a lot of phone tag, trying to get answers, but after a few weeks, I still haven't been able to connect with anyone who can help (athough I've received messages when I was out - so it's not entirely their fault).

Just to add onto what JS said.
Most definitly the LCD could be damaged by the cold weather, when I was working in Alberta stores we ran into that alot.
As for why it is not covered under warranty, the way that I like to think of it is that it's like your car. Your warranty (mnfg or otherwise) doesnt' cover a car accident. That's something that your insurance covers. It is much the same with your laptop, the mfg warranty, and product service plan don't cover the physical damage to the screen, however your daughters home insurance may.
Most definitly again to repeat what JS said, the idea of a saleperson saying coffee being spilled on the laptop would be covered under the warranty should be addressed by our customer service department.

I kind of think of the LCD screen has the windshield of a car... very rarely will a car company replace a windshield under warranty if it has a crack in it...
But, if you can prove your case that lcd screen should be able to widthstand a reasonable range of temperatures and it was within those temperatures that the lcd "self-destructed", then you might get it fixed under warranty.
This would follow suit that some defective part in a computer causes an overheating which basically fries all the naerby pieces, in which case everything would be fixed so that the computer is operational again (which means replacing physically damaged parts, other than cosmetic)
