i bought an acer monitor that only has ( hdmi input, vga and dvi ) thats it but how do i get sound if my monitor doesnt have audio outputs/inputs. i know other monitors have that 3.5mm audio output/input but mine doesnt.so how do i get sound? even if i buy speakers how will i connect them to my monitor if it only has hdmi for sound. do i connect speakers to my tower? how about if i wanna use my monitor for ps3 how will i get sound if there are no inputs/outputs for speakers on the monitor. Please help i really feel like i wasted my money.

As far as PS3 goes, you can hook up your monitor via HDMI so long as it's HDCP compliant, then you can hook up speakers via a different input, and just go into the PS3's audio settings to map the audio output through that, instead of through the HDMI output. I'm not sure if that would affect the timing between audio and sound though...

PC speakers would connect to the tower, not the monitor.

That's correct. The monitor is purely for display, the sound originates from the media device, never from display device. Same principle as with a tv, although they have built in speakers - but the sound isn't coming from your tv, it's playing through your tv's speakers form its origin - the cable box, ps3, dvd player, etc, and can be diverted along the way.

If you are going to buy speakers, look for a demo. You get what you pay for. Also, check out 4.1, 5.1 and 7.1 solutions, especially if you have a sound card. Surround sound doesn't cost that much more.
I like 5.1 as a start. The center channel is great for a senior who has problems hearing the vocals. If you don't want wiring for rear speakers, also check out "sound bars" or "sound projectors" (avoid 2 channels). They bounce sound around the room to achieve the surround effect.
