Question about optimisation

Hello, I recently submitted a newly purchased desktop PC to Future Shop for, "optimisation": the removal of bloatware & the creation of recovery discs. I wasn't able to ask a technician questions at the time as they were busy, but I did gain some insight from another employee. However, I'd appreciate some answers.

Apparently the procedure usually takes up to five hours. I was told that the Technician would remove bloatware & upgrade drivers via Windows Update. Surely such a process wouldn't take five hours? Am I missing any other procedure, or do the technicians do something else? Would they install any software if I had not specificed it on the list.

I'd appreciate a clarification, thank you

It can take up to five hours because depending on how out-of-date your computer is, the process could take longer with more updates. I bought a new laptop last week, and even after days of using it, I am still updating it. Some of the downloads too a long time because they ended up being hundreds of megabytes, simply because the OS was so out-of-date. Also, often times, one update opens the door to many more updates - for example, on my new laptop, I downloaded one update that was 20MB in size, but immediately after that update happened, there were then about 15-20 more updates that ended up being worth around 150MB that opened up because those couldn't be available without that previous one being present in the system. That's the way things go.

As for the software removal, I found there wasn't a whole lot of "bloatware" on my laptop (though there was some), but there is nothing like Firefox, iTunes, Quicktime, or whatever like that. I had to go out and get that all myself, which also took time to download, install and calibrate for my uses.

And to answer your last question, no, the techs will not install any other software than what you indicated you wanted when you filled out the information on the requisition.

Hope that helps, but keep in mind my words come from personal experience. I am not, nor have I ever been, a part of the ConnectPro team that works at various Future Shops.

Re: Question about optimisation

I'll also add to keep your computer optimized after receiving your machine....

  • learn how to execute "Disk Cleanup" on your computer
  • learn how to "defrag" your hard drive
  • if you have Norton 360, also explore the "registry" cleaner

If technicians need to burn recovery disks, this alone can take two or three hours, depending on the brand of the computer. In the case of Samsung laptops, the recovery disks can take three hours, and their recovery process makes it so that nothing else can be done with the laptop while the recovery disks are being made.

Installing Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, too.

The rest of the time is covered by the rest of the process -- Windows (and if necessary Microsoft) updates, bloatware removal, software installation, tweaks, optimization, etc.
