To clarify what device are you plugging into your laptop? What happens if you using a different port?

Oh sorry its my WD PASSPORT 500G, bought from Singapore last Jan 2011. I plugged it back cause I removed it for a bit when was cleaning, when i put it back the light usually turns on and i can hear the usual roaring from the device.. But my laptap that has windows vista says suddenly that it malfunctioned. Tried it all on my usb ports, says the same thing. Tried My mouse and some devices they work fine. I cant see my passport in My Computer, im helpless have lots of stuff there.

My main concern is I want at least to restore/ retrieve my files from that external hard disk and if i can still use the warranty of it. Im clueless as on how it will be fixed, and since it happened.. Im doubting the WD products certainly now that im planning to buy another external hard disk..

Hmm...
- was the hard drive spinning when you were cleaning? Not a good idea. Spinning platters are not designed to be moved around. It does not matter which manufacturer.
- the hard drive is a seal unit, it does not need cleaning.
- how were you cleaning? with a vacuum cleaner? feather duster? I hope everything was turned off. Static and power surges are not heathly for a computer or hard drive.

hi there, thanks for helping me out. i was dusting on my table and all of my gadgets are off.. but thank you for reminding me about static and power surges! by the way, i figured out already that the USB cord of my WD is the one that is broken. I tried my WD in another computer using its original usb cord but it wasnt still working., Godd thing I happened to see a another usb cord beside and tried it. IT WORKED! was able to open it. So, unfortunately WD USB CORD are easily busted. Thanks for the help by the way!
