boot problem

Hi guys.

I've got an HP Pavilion dv7 with VISTA Home Premium.

I tried to boot it up this morning and I have the following black screen error:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

File: \Boot\BCD
Status 0xc000000f

An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

I get the normal insert disk message, the thing is, the recovery discs that came with the pc from future shop store doesn't seem to work!

Can anyone please help me?

Many thanks

The HP recovery disks, while sure to solve your problem, are a bit excessive. They'll erase everything from the computer, then reload Windows the way it was installed when it left HP. If you've got nothing on the computer you need to keep that isn't already backed up, this will definitely fix your problem. There is a simpler fix, though:

You'll need to get any Windows Vista installer disk, whether it's a Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, or Anytime Upgrade. Once you've booted to the disk, you'll be given the option to 'Repair your computer.' Clicking this often repairs BCD errors immediately, and you'll be prompted to restart the computer.

If you're having difficulties, or are unable to get your hands on a standard Vista install disk, Future Shop's technicians (or any computer technician) should have access to a disk, and should be able to run this repair for you without too much trouble. Call your nearest Future Shop for details and pricing.

Re: boot problem

Great.

When I bought the pc, future shop made me the recovery discs. Now those disks don’t work.

And I have to buy new recovery discs for something I already paid?

Re: boot problem

The recovery disks made for your computer will fix your issue -- by completely erasing everything and reloading the software the way it was when it left the manufacturer. It works, but for an issue like this, it's a bit excessive.

Any disk with the Windows Recovery Environment should fix your issue. Some searching around online shows this website, which provides a download link, and instructions to use the software. (Note that neither myself nor Future Shop take any responsibility for any action you take here -- if you're having issues with the given instructions, I recommend having the issue resolved professionally.)
