I currently have a Sony Projection TV capable of 1080p HD. Tv is hooked up to Sony Receiver with 5.1 Surround Sound. Recently purchased a SONY Blu-Ray Player. Got it home and realized the TV only had a DVI port. Went back to Future Shop and purchased a HDMI - DVI Adaptor.
Hooked everything up and while picture quality was superb the sound quality was slightly better than what you get from a TIM HORTON'S drive thru speaker. The sound came out very distorted. I read somewhere that DVI only carries a video signal and no audio. The audio connections are still running from my receiver to the TV.
Starting to think I may have to return the BLU RAY PLAYER since the sound quality is terrible. Of course with me being electronically challenged I may have done something wrong.
any thoughts?

In fact, the sound of a BD player should be better than a regular DVD player.
What type on connexion did you use to transfer the sound of the BD player to your receiver?

The only sound connection I had was coming from my current DVD/RECEIVER into the television. The sales person at Future Shop didn't mention I'd need anything new for the audio in order to make the Blu-Ray do what it's supposed to do.
What is it that I would need?

First, if you want the sound of the BD player to come out from the 5 speakers hooked to your receiver, you need to transfer the sound from the player to the receiver.
Do your receiver has a HDMI input? If it don't, you should use a digital audio input of some sort like an optical or coaxial input.

My receiver doesn't have HDMI but does have an optical port.
So all I need is an optical cable which will connect from my receiver to the Blu-Ray?
My surround sound won't be affected?
