Both my laptop and my television have a HDMI outlet. I'm wondering if a high speed HDMI cable would allow me to use my laptop to stream movies from youtube or something like that onto my television like using my television as a monitor.

Any HDMI cable will allow you to do this. SImply plug the one end to your laptop and the other end to your TV and ensure the TV is on the correct input and you'll be good to go. The sound will even make use of the TV's speakers. If you have your TV connected to a home theatre system, you will even be able to get sound through that!
