Re: I need to hook up an older tv to a dvd player. What do ...

First thing you will need to do is see what connections are available on the television.

If component (red, green, blue) are available, my suggestion is this connection.  A pair of audio cross connects or RCA (red and white) will complete the sound side. 2 cables.

If composite (yellow) is available, you can either find a RCA (yellow, white, red) cross connects or a separate RCA (yellow) AND a RCA (white and red).  This will be sufficient to get an adequate picture on most tvs. 1 or 2 cables.

You could replace the RCA (yellow) with an S-Video cross connect for a better picture, but you will still need the RCA (white and red) for audio. 2 cables.

Here is the tricky one;  Lets say you only have RF Coax (threaded single cable) to connect to.  You will need to purchase a third party device that will allow you to hook up multiple devices to this switch box.  Typically you could hook up 2 or 3 devices to this box and switch between them.  Typically they come as a RCA (yellow, white, and red) connection.  This will give a satisfactory connection, but may have some static on screen from the cross over of wire types. many cables.

finally if there is a component connection, check the tv manual to see if a progressive scan can be shown, and check the dvd manual to see if progressive scan is available here as well.  If both devices have this ability, please set this up.  This will make a good picture better.

It's called an RF Modulator and Futureshop sells them for around $40. It allows equipment that don't have a coaxial output to hook up to older tv's without RCA jacks( red white yellow).
