Hi, sorry for what could be a simple question but I am new to the home theatre experience. Would my yamaha reciever out put sound and video from a DVD player connected to it via standard red yellow and white cables, to my lcd tv via the HDMI cable? I think not as it does not appear to work.

Your guess is correct - the Yamaha HTR-6240 does not upconvert composite video and component video inputs to the HDMI output. If you connect something to, say, the composite video input of the HTR-6240 you have to connect the composite video monitor output of the HTR-6240 to your TV's composite video input.

Thanks for the confirmation hb. So, as i have surround sound speakers connected to the reciever, if I ran a composite or component set of wires from the DVD player to the reciever, and then from the reciever to the TV's composite or component input, would I get sound out of the tv or the surround speakers?

The answer is - neither.
Composite or component cables only carry the video signal. You need to run a separate cable from the DVD player's audio output to the receiver's audio input in order to get sound from the speakers connected to the receiver. Most DVD players provide several sound output options: optical or coaxial digital or both (either of which would be the preferred connection method) or analog stereo.

ok, thanks again.! i will have a look at the back of the player and sort it out. Still waiting for my PS3 to come back from Sony
(it had the flashing red light thing going on) so can't play my blue ray discs or games! at least the DVD player will work now.
