It really depends on what style you want to DJ. Here are some options

Midi DJ controller and a laptop.

CD DJ controller with a mixer

or 2 record players and a mixer(you will also need to buy records so you would have to factor in the costs)

You will also need a pair of decent DJ headphones.

Let me know what you are looking at and I will give you some options. :smileywink:

If your not looking out to dish out too money because you are only starting, one of the more popular consoles walking out the door (my store) seems to be the Hercules Console which comes with Virtual DJ software.

Virtual DJ isn't necessarily the industry standard but it's a great way to get the basic idea of mixing, beat matching, implementing loops and much more.

I've always been taught to make the investment into a system right away (as my first and only set up so far - Tech mk's w/ serato) but if it seems you are taking this as a @home/party/wedding rig. This might be the way to go.

Mobility is great as you don't have to lug around a whole bunch of gear, but simply plug the console into a computer.

But from a DJ, keep in mind that, if you plan on "going big" or maybe taking this DJ thing a lot more seriously, this console does have its restrictions and there is so much more out there for you in the DJ industry as there are so many more add-ons, consoles, mixers, effects, etc. So eventually if you bought this and said  "hey i want to expand on this". You will most likely go for an upgrade thus taking your chances on the resale attempts or maybe you won't mind keeping the Hercules.

To sum up this rambling, if this is going to be something that is gonna be the once in a while use but alongside the consideration that you want to have that true DJ feel. Then go for the Hercules. But if DJ'ing is something you want to take further and further maybe into a career or PT then let me know and i'll help you decide on a different set up.

Also check out, the new console we carry (which IMO is a considerable step up from the Hercules) - Traktor Kontrol S4
