What you need to look for is a DVD player that is (a) designed for use in North American and (b) is multiregion so that it will play DVDs from Europe and (c) is multisystem so that DVDs from Europe which uses the PAL broadcast system will display properly on a North American TV which uses the NTSC broadcast system.
I recommend you do a web search on the words "multisystem multiregion DVD player" because forum rules don't allow me to give you a direct link to a product you could buy.

The Pioneer DV-49 (ELITE) player or the Oppo 980H player would be good choices.
They offer PAL>NTSC (and vice versa) conversion on the fly.
You may end up having to look up a code to unlock the region, but they'll work right off the bat for REGION 0 discs. Simply google "Pioneer DV-49 region unlock" or Oppo 980H and you'll see how it's done.

What I ended up doing is buying an external DVD player for my computer and set its region to 2 so I could watch my oversea movies. Works fine, I bought the LG GE 20 from Future Shop for $60 or $70.
