The quick awnser is no.
Even though both 1080i and 1080p have the same ammount of pixels 1920x1080, the images in an 1080i are in a interlaced format (like the old tube based tv also knowen as CRT's) . 1080i sources get "painted" on the screen sequentially: the odd-numbered lines of resolution appear on your screen first, followed by the even-numbered lines--all within 1/30 of a second. Progresive-scan formats such as 480p, 720p, and 1080p convey all of the lines of resolution sequentially in a single pass, which makes for a smoother, cleaner image, especially with sports and other motion-intensive content. Even though plasma and LCD flat-panel's, are inherently progressive in nature, when the incoming source is interlaced, as 1080i is, they convert it to progressive scan for display but it still wont be as fast as 1080p for those action movies and video games!
Hope this helps you out

Although it won't be the highest resolution available...you will be blown away by the quality of BluRay on an HDTV.
For example, take the HD signal for your TV broadcasts and compare to the SD broadcast...you can tell the difference, right! HD is far superior.
Well BluRay is HD and DVD is not...so in cocnlusion, will Blu Ray be as good on 1080P as 1080i, no, it won't...but, it will still look pretty **bleep** good! I would say for the prices that the BluRay players are going for and the fact that it is the stable format, invest in one and you won't be disappointe!
PS - If you don't have a Home Theatre Audio System yet...treat yourself becasue it will really get you into the movie!

The game changer is 3D.
If you are interested at all in 3D, then you should review what TV/BD player you will be buying.
