Two questions for you:

1. what is the make/model number of the cable box? and the AV receiver?

2. if you connect the cable box directly to the TV via HDMI - do you get sound from the TV's speakers?

If you have a Motorola cable box, take a look at the system setup settings on it. One of the settings toggles between DVI/HDMI, and if it is set to DVI the box will not output sound over the HDMI cable.

Is that cable that is connecting your digital box to the TV a HDMI cable, or a DVI-HDMI cable (i.e. one of the connectors is a DVI connector). If so, the latter will not carry sound, and you will need to use another audio cable connection (stereo cables, optical, or digital coax).

Ryan is probably correct, many early cable boxes used DVI to output video while most TVs did not come with DVI connections.  You'll need either an optical or stereo audio cables from the cable box to your receiver.
