You wouldn't use a HDMI cable to connect an external hard drive to a PVR. HDMI cables trasmit video and audio signals, not data. You would want to be using a USB cable (the one that came in the box with the hard drive).

Before you buy an external hard drive and cable for use with your HDPVR, make sure you check your HDPVR's specs to find out what type of external hard drive interface it requires.

For example, all of the HDPVR models sold for use on Shaw cable use an eSATA (and not a USB) hard drive interface. Furthermore, many but unfortunately not all eSATA external hard drives work flawlessly with an HDPVR. If you want to be absolutely sure you are buying a hard drive (and the correct cable) that is guaranteed to work with your HDPVR, then buy the model recommended by your cable company. For example, click here to see the one sold by Future Shop specifically for use with Shaw's HDPVRs.
