Yep, you need to have both components 3D compatible.

Just as a note, you can absolutely watch 3D movies on a regular HDTV, you just can't watch them in 3D.

Yes, this is correct, but I believe you need to have a 3D Blu-ray player in order to display the 2D version of the 3D disc (anyone follow that?
)
I don't think 3D Blu-ray discs will play at all on a 2D Blu-ray player.

That is very annoying when studios do that, but it's pretty rare.
The MVC/MPEG-4 codec is designed to issue only the left-eye stream when being played in a 2D Blu-ray player, so when issued to spec the discs should even play in a Samsung BD-P1000.
The vast majority of the major motion picture Blu-ray releases contain a 2D Blu-ray with the 3D one.
