Transferring video from TV to my Mac?

Hi, I was wondering how to transfer recorded video off of my TV (I have Rogers PVR) and onto my Mac. First of all is this legal? And second of all, what product(s) will I need to do this?

just plug your composite cables into one end and then say an external hardrive into the other and then plug the external hardrive into your mac. Im sure there is a simplier way of going about it but that is all i can think of for now. I will keep checking though.
