do i need a specific HDMI cable to connect my kinect to my xbox? or will a basic HDMI cable work?

Hi, the Kinect sensor bar should have all the wires in the box needed to connect to your Xbox 360 console.

I bought it as a gift and apparently the cord isn't long enough, so we need a longer one. will a rocketfish hdmi cord work?

The Kinect connects to the Xbox with a USB cable, not an HDMI cable, so you would need a USB extension cable. A side effect you may run into with extending that is both power loss and reduced signal quality for the Kinect. What that would look like if it happens to you is that the Kinect might not power up unless it's connected to it's own power supply, or it may work intermittently. Is the Xbox not near the TV?
