This is awesome.  If you can, you should try to get some steelbooks as well.  They would be a very nice addiditon to my collection.

I had this on preorder with WB forever, but when I heard they were only releasing theatrical I decided to wait.

Not sure how many discs this release will be, but the extended release will be 9 disc according to Jackson. (3 Extended Blu Discs, 3 SD Special Feature Discs, 3 Digital Copies)

If you don't care which version you get, this one will probably be the cheaper of the two so it will be great for many people and completionists!

This is supposed to be 6 discs . 3 blu ray discs for theatrical release and the other 3 discs are non blu ray which has the extras

I might still get this since the extended release of the movie won't be out until just before or after the Hobbit which is 2011 and 2012

For this initial release, the transfers will present the films in 1080p HD video, in the correct widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English audio will be present in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 format, along with Dolby Surround, along with subtitles in English, English SDH, French and Spanish. There will be 3 BD discs (containing the movies) and 3 standard DVD discs (containing legacy extras). The DVDs will also contain Digital Copy versions of each film. They'll come delivered in a multi-disc Elite package set inside a premium rigid slipcase.

A steelbook release of this means 3 separate steels, Im down with it. This is the only way Im buying these as I have the EE DVDs already. That should me hold me until they release it again

Yes, a note to Warner - many won't buy the theatrical release... but if it's in a Steelbook, and a real Steelbook, not an IronPack, you've got quite a few more sales than you would have had!!!

I for one am excited to hear this too, although I've got to be cautious too and check out the info for the Canadian release especially the inclusion of digital copies. Alliance Films still has the rights to release most of the New Line Pictures films (including Lord of the Rings) in Canada. A check of Alliance Films' previous New Line releases tells me that they don't include digital copies in any of the New Line blu-rays that they've released in Canada so far (HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU, PRIDE AND GLORY, 17 AGAIN, INKHEART, FOUR CHRISTMASES, GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST, etc). The films mentioned have digital copies in the US versions so I don't know why they're not able to include digital copies for New Line films here in Canada. The only time Alliance Films had included digital copies in their Canadian blu-rays happened twice and only for films released in the US by Universal Pictures which are CORALINE and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. Here's hoping that Alliance does include digital copies in the Canadian release of Lord of the Rings; otherwise I'll just have to order mine in the US.

I'm on the fence with this.  I've got the EE's on DVD and don't want to buy the theatrical versions.  On the other hand I do want these on BD and if the EEs are coming for another 2 years I might just have to double dip which is probably what WB is counting on most fans doing.
