Recommendation to Brana on future steelbooks

[ Edited ]

After taking a look at the upcoming 2012 release and being somewhat dissapointed by it, I just thought I should post this in the hopes that the new movie buyer will see it and at least take it under consideration.

I'd suggest that in the future, when a movie has more than one release type (eg. 1-disc, 2-disc, 2-disc + digital copy, etc.) that Future Shop make every effort to ensure that the Steelbook version of that release is based on the one which has the most bonus features.

Speaking for myself, I probably won't bother picking up the 2012 steelbook now that I've seen it's been based on the 1-disc release instead of the 3-disc set.  However, I probably won't bother with the regular 3-disc release either, since the movie was only allright.  The steelbook initially was enough to tip the scales in favour of buying it, but without the bonus features I have little incentive for doing anything more than renting it.  I guess the rental place will be getting my money for this release.

I half agree with you on this one however, I believe this might be done to keep the steelbooks below the $30 margin. I personally wouldn't mind paying $31.99 or so for the 3-disc set but the average Joe would rather the cheaper amaray.

Unfortunately we had no choice with 2012. The decision was made in Europe to go with the 1 disc hence why we got that version. Since it was already being built, Sony bulked into that one before we could look at other options (plus this was done before my time). I do understand the completist that exists in all of us wants whatever the full blown version is in the Steelbook and if we had a choice it would have been that way. On the plus side this is a BD sized case and at $25.99 it's our lowest priced Steelbook new release to date. Going this single disc route along with Sony's new lower pricing structure allowed this to happen.

That's definitely understandable as to why this happened.  I'm not trying to complain at all about the treatment 2012 got... ignoring the disc count, it looks like a nicely-designed steelbook.

However, I did want to post this so that in the future, FS might push for the multi-disc set to get the steelbook treatment whenever possible.  That's assuming FS has any input in this area, of course.  It may depend partially on the studio... Sony isn't exactly one that seems to think about their customers first; nor is WB, and they're the ones who gave us those awful Iron Packs.  I have more faith in most of the other studios to take the higher road.

Speaking as a collector of movies in general, I can say that personally I don't mind a somewhat higher pricepoint if it means a better product.  And I'd think that most collectors would feel the same way.  It's always nice to get a bargain, but it's even nicer if the product you're getting is as complete as possible.

Those average Joes can always buy the regular amaray, which is sold pretty much everywhere.  Most of the people who buy Steelbooks are collectors, and these people tend to be willing to pay a bit extra for a better package.  So there'd be no harm in FS pushing for multi-disc releases, when possible.

Thanks for the offer, but on behalf of this 'average Joe', I actually *like* the fact that 2012 is a single-disc SteelBook priced at $25.99.

Especially since the reviews for this movie have been lukewarm, I was interested in renting it only.

However, this SteelBook edition has convinced me to 'blind buy' it at $25.99.  If it were to cost more for a 3-disc version, I would likely go back to renting it.

So this SteelBook has created at least one, actually two, extra purchases for Future Shop as I pre-ordered mine this morning.

I agree.

I don't watch the extra features anyway.

I couldn't care less about a disc with an expiry date on it.

For me its steelbook or nothing.

Hurt Locker already came out on Blu Ray and I think it was a Steelbook south of the Border.

I can't see this really being a steelbook in our market though as it is more a movie geared towards an American audience even though many non Americians may enjoy it as well

That's fine for some... but while some people only collect steelbooks (some people even seem to prefer when it's an empty case, like one of those pre-order deals), others like collecting the full package.

In any case, Brana has already said in another thread that in the future, for any steelbook he organizes, it'll be the all-out edition that gets the Steelbook treatment.  So problem solved.
