Just A Little Upset

I'm a little irked today thanks to Future Shop. I called to complain but the woman I talked to obviously didn't have a clue how the issue happened or what to tell me. I sent an email as well but that resulted in a long winded form letter response that attempted to justify the reasons for what happened but I still think it's just plain wrong of Future Shop to just raise their prices on an item for no other reason than supply and demand. The item wasn't onsale and then bumped back to the regular price....they just raised the regular price.

Here's the note I sent which explains what I'm upset about.

"I printed off the page listing for the Acer One 11.6" (AO722-0465) last night with a price of $349.99 and intended to buy it online today. When I went to purchase it Tuesday morning it was listed at $399.99, up $50 in less than 10 hours. It wasn't listed as being on sale so you've jacked up the price. What gives? How can you justify the price increase? How can I get it at the previously listed lower price? Please explain this. I was prepared to buy it but feel like I'm being scammed by your company now."

If nothing else I felt better by venting but this to me seems like sneaky blantent price gouging. The new before taxes price is higher than what it would have been with tax before the price jump. There's no way the laptop suddenly increased in value overnight.

I realize I'm only one person and losing my little sale doesn't mean much to a big company like Future Shop but I have spent a lot of money over the years in their stores and I'm pretty sure I won't be again any time soon. I think I'll give the local small store retailers a look from now on.

My mistake. Sorry about that. I just thought it was something that others might also be interested in and should keep an eye on in the future.

I guess the lesson to be learned is don't wait to purchase something from Future Shop when the price is right. You never know when they'll increase the cost.

Re: Just A Little Upset

Though I understand the situation and the fact that you must be very upset about the overnight price jump, this is really a common practice, especially with online sales.

Prices are always subject to change, whether or not they are a part of an advertised sale or not.  All online retailers change prices on a daily, hourly, or by-the-minute.  Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't.

Most of the time, prices drop over time -- especially with electronics and software (games, movies).  The up side is that if you wait, your laptop will likely drop back down in price to what it was before, or even lower.  They all eventually will.

I cannot explain what happened in your case and why it jumped up.  I know that it is sometimes common for a retailer to have a certain price when inventory is above a certain threshold.  Once that threshold is crossed (for example, there are only 10 left of a product), another price kicks in immediately.  This could be what happened in your experience.

Other times, when a certain time has passed, the price automatically jumps.  Or sometimes the original price was in error, and was never intended as a customer-visible price.

I know that when LORD OF THE RINGS was released on Blu-ray, I ordered it on Future Shop for $18.99 when it was retailing for $69.99 everywhere else.  Future Shop sent me an email saying that their online price was in error, but still honoured the order that I had placed.

When you see things at a good price -- especially on the Internet -- it's best to grab it right away and worry about it later.  Especially with Future Shop, you can always return your product later if you don't open it, but you don't always get a second chance to order it in the first place.

Re: Just A Little Upset

Thanks for the insight Atomic.

Your explaination makes sense I guess but I can't help but feel that logic is wrong and somewhat deceitful. Just because inventory is getting low, that gives them the right to raise the price? That's like McDonalds running low in fries and rasing the cost for a medium fry just because people will still want those fries and will either pay or go to Burger King instead.

OK, maybe it's not exactly like that but I think you get the idea.

I guess I'll just keep checking online and elsewhere.

Thanks!

Re: Just A Little Upset

Bundy, you are right.  It is a bit of a crazy practice, but that is the nature of online sales today.

Online retailers are constantly looking around at each other's prices to make sure they are not priced too high, and not priced too low -- especially with Future Shop's price match guarantee where they beat the difference by 10%.  It is kind of like buying gas in Canada.  You can drive around and look for the best gas price, and once one retailer drops, the others soon follow.

When I was traveling in Malaysia, they don't advertise gas prices.  Their gas price is fixed and it is the same at every retailer -- just like McDonald's fries.

So yes, the downside is that there is never a fixed price for your electronics.  The upside is that you can potentially snag a deal if you watch the prices for a period of time.

Particularly with electronics, it pays to wait as ALL prices eventually drop.  However, you need to buy sometime, so wait until you need something before you buy it.

Re: Just A Little Upset

Good info Atomic.

I suppose my biggest problem is I'm not a window shopper. When I need something I just go and buy it and then get out of the store.

I do spend a bit more time online looking at reviews of electronics and looking at prices but usually I don't wait long.

I'm going to give the Future Shop Price Watch feature a try for a while just to see how and if it works.
