Some changes in the Community

[ Edited ]

Hey everyone!

We’ve made some (what I think are exciting) changes to the Rank & Permissions structure.  For one, we’ve published it!

Second, from listening to your feedback and seeing the way in which everyone is wanting to share information it became clear that the permissions needed to be opened up.  All users, regardless of rank, can post images and links (provided they don’t violate the Community Guidelines).

And third, custom icons!  Members who are ranked Emerging Expert and above can now display their very own icons.  We ask that you do not use logos or offensive images (again, see the Community Guidelines).  Attention: you will only be able to customize your icon after the next time you move up in rank (if you are Emerging Expert  now, you will not have the ability to customize your icon until you achieve Emerging Expert ).

See the Community help section for more information.

Note: images must be hosted externally (including custom icons).

To post an image:

Internet Explorer

1.      Right click on the image, select “Properties” and copy the URL.

2.      Click on the image icon from the message tool bar.

3.      Paste the URL into the address bar.

4.      Click submit.

Firefox

1.      Right click on the image, select “Properties” and copy the URL.

2.      Enter HTML code into the message text box:

<img src="enter image URL">

Eg.

<img src="http://www.futureshop.ca/multimedia/products/large/10096454.jpg">

3.      Click submit.

To post a link:

Internet Explorer

1.      Copy the URL.

2.      Highlight the text you would like to link.

3.      Click on the link icon in the message tool bar.

4.      Paste the URL into the address bar.

5.      Click submit.

Firefox

1.       Copy the URL.

2.      Enter HTML code into the message text box:

<A href="enter URL" target=_blank>enter text that you would like linked.</A>

Eg.

<A href="http://www.futureshop.ca/multimedia/products/large/10096454.jpg" target=_blank>here is a link</A>

3.      Click submit.

To change your icon (Emerging Experts and above):

  1. Right click on the icon, select “Properties” and copy the URL (must be hosted externally and should be 36 pixels x 36 pixels)

  2. Go to Future Shop Community Forum and log in

  3. Click on “My Profile”

  4. Select “Icons”

  5. Paste URL into “Personal Icon URL” at bottom of page

  6. Click “add icon”

EDIT: I've added instructions on posting links and images if using Firefox.

Unfortunately I have to make it to the top rank before I can change my icon again...you're lucky you didn't initiate this process after I couldn't move up in rank anymore, or I'd be out of luck!

Thanks for posting the official guidelines for ranks, btw. It's going to be a nice addition :smileyhappy:

I'm also going to add my thanks.  I was trying to figure out how the ranking system worked, but could only guess at best!  And the ability to add custom icons is great... goodbye grasshopper, hello my claim to fame (when I actually bother to update it). :smileyhappy:

I supposed we can't have bigger icons? 36x36(at least it looks like that size) is a little small don't you think? 96x96 would be perfect.

I had posted an unofficial post based on a collective board experience - I'm sure if you search you can find it :smileytongue:

The only problem with bigger icons is you're limiting the access to broadband users. If there's 20 different people on a page, that's 20 extra 5-30kb images.
I'm all for them, but I can see why FS wouldn't want that.

No even 96x96(seems to be the "normal" size on most of the forum I visit)? It's not that much to load, it's about 3-5KB depending on what you use...I don't think it's going to slow down peoples connection, hek, even someone on a dial up connection wouldn't have any problem with 5KB. Even if it's a page with 20 posts in it, that's just 100KB...you get more than that just with any publicity on the net:smileyvery-happy:.
Until next time,
