Hi there, Future Shop does not carry region free DVD players (no big box stores do as they are illegal to sell from what I understand).
Region free DVD players are not carried by stores like Future Shop due to copyright regulations. Generally speaking, each different region has a different set of copyright regulations, and the restrictions are set up to avoid problems with copyright infringement.
Now then, that said, if you have dvd's from a specific region, you can try checking out a foreign electronics store as they may have the version you need. Alternately, you can try looking around online.

Future Shop used to carry a philips dvd player which could be unlocked for region free playback. Your best option would be to google the models you are interested in order to see if they can be unlocked. Another alternative that i know is region free out the of the box, if i am not mistaken, are oppo dvd players. They are regarded as the best dvd players on the market, however as you can guess, they are also more expensive than your regular dvd player.

Uh, no. You understand wrong. Region-free DVD players aren't illegal at all. Region codes were introduced by the movie industry to try and prevent someone in Australia, for example, from buying a movie DVD from Canada or the US and watching it before that movie is in theatres in Australia. It was done as a preventive measure, not a legal one. I bought my last region-free player at(competitor), so your claim that they are not sold by stores like Future Shop is also false.

Wow... Way to dredge up an old thread. I stated that my info was as far as I understood and others piped in after that already. There are issues surrounding region free DVD players that actually have brought their legality into question thanks to copyright laws (yes, you can find questions being brought up in government discussions if you look hard enough). Of course, there are also suggestions that it has to do with price fixing, or with control release dates, but at the end of the day, different copyright laws in different countries can impact what is allowed to be played and region coding provides a way to manage this.
Of course, this still doesn't change the fact that as of that point in time (when the question was originally asked), Future Shop didn't have any region free DVD players (and neither did many of their competitors).

I've told you why region codes are used. It has ZERO to do with copyright, as I've said.

The region encodings are a matter of trade agreements rather than regulation or law. As to your other claim that none of the DVD players in the Future Shop catalogue are region-free, well, again, you're wrong. The Pioneer DV-420V-K is region-free.

See my edited post above (now that I'm at a computer and was able to double-check a few things).

I'll say it again. Region codes are a matter of trade agreements rather than regulation or law. Future Shop and other stores have always sold region-free DVD players, and always will. They were sold at Future Shop back when the thread was started, and they are sold today.

Did you check the catalog at that time? I will say it again and make it really clear. I checked the catalog back then and confirmed that there were no region free DVD players at that time. I may have misunderstood the reasoning, but that didn't change the fact that there were no region free models at that time.
By the way, I'm done with this discussion. Have a nice day.
