If I purchase a receiver with HDMI switching capability so that I can connect multiple HDMI inputs into the receiver and have only one HDMI output to my HD TV, will I have to always have to power on my receiver when using any of the connected devices?

if you are running all of your audio and video sources through the receiver you will need to have the receiver on.
