HDMI is a High Definition Multimedia Interface connection.
HDMI provides uncompressed digital audio and video (ie sound and picture) over a single cable.

An HDMI output is what you will find on an item such as an upscaling DVD player, a Blu-ray player, or High Definition cable box. It is the highest quality output currently available, and the best and easiest way to hook up your HD Television.
The cable looks like this:

In the top left of the image you will see an insert of what an HDMI output will look like on the back of your components. An HDMI input would look the same. be sure to check how it is lableled before you plug in.
