Looking to Return DC Universe Online, since it is now free.

The son of a friend of mine purachsed DC Univesre Online from one of your stores on the weekend. He and his mother was unaware of the fact that DC Universe is actually now free to download and play for the PC and PS3 via the official Sony site (http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/), this has been the case since Nov 1.
He has opened the package but not insalled the game yet. Since the game is free to download and play now, and they paid 40 dollars for the game, they would like to return it for a full refund.
I realize the rules around gaming and piracy and returns, but I feel this should be a special case. I would like to know your thoughts before calling the store which is an hour away an attempting a return.
