For 'most comprehensive' I would recommend either Kaspersky Internet Security or Norton 360.  These are the highest ranked suites in many security software tests, and those are their highest packages that includes the most features.

There are others antivirus software that you can consider also:

  • Avast Internet Security
  • Eset Internet Security
  • Checkpoint Zonealarm Extreme Security (sounds majestic just by the name itself :smileytongue:)

At the risk of sounding biased, wouldn't Microsoft Security Essentials be the most comprehensive product available for malware and virus protection?  And it just happens to be free.

It's not the most comprehensive as the others have features above and beyond, making them more comprehensive.  It is a good package though, and could be combined with other software packages to make a comprehensive bundle.

Just choose one security suite.  Some people make the mistake of thinking more is better, when in fact having multiple scanning programs will cause them to conflict with each other.

Just a thought.

This is priceless advice if they're the same type of security.  But if you have an anti-virus program, you will also want an anti-spyware program, and may want other software to do data backups and regular maintenance.  Microsoft Security Essentials is mainly an anti-virus, so anyone who uses it should also have an anti-spyware program.  Some features left out of it as well are a backup utility or a tweaking utility, such as those included with the Norton 360.  That's what I meant by 'comprehensive'.

That's not correct. Microsoft Security Essentials has anti-spyware function as well. In fact, upon installing MSE, Microsoft Defender will be disabled. If you then look at the Security Center, you will notice MSE will function both as anti-virus and anti-spyware.

All anti-virus programs function like this(with the exception of turning off Windows Defender).  However, anti-spyware programs focus on malware that does not exhibit virus-like behaviour, and by doing so will be much more effective than MSE or any other anti-virus that does not have a separate anti-spyware component.  MSE has similar anti-spyware capabilities compared to Norton anti-virus or Kaspersky anti-virus, but not as good as the Internet Security packages from the same companies.

The other piece that's important to know is that having multiple anti-spyware programs does not cause issues.

Do you use shaw high speed internet ?

[ Edited ]

If you use Shaw high speed internet you can get a complete internet security package for free. It's called Shaw secure. Before anyone jumps down my neck, be advised that Shaw secure is actually F-secure under a different name, and it's actually got really good reviews and is better rated than Norton. It's the only reaL time updating you can get on an anti-virus. If there is a new virus definition anywhere in the world, it will be updated to all computers all over the world using F-secure within 30 seconds. It comes with not only Anit-virus but spyware and malware and anti-spam features as well. I was skeptical but after doing research it seems like a very solid program. I actually has a Trojan virus and F-secure removed it within seconds.

Long live Harman Kardon !
