Product keys are typically product serial numbers.
- Install DVD's need the product keys for the installation to proceed.
- Some people install software online, it also needs product keys.
- some computers have no DVD drives (eg netbooks), online installation is the only choice

If I don't have the Office 2010 suite at all on my PC, can I download online and install with a product key only? I am getting confusing information at a local computer store. They told me I cannot use a product key if I don't already have an Office 2010 trial that expired and needs to be renewed.

One thing to note, though: The Office 2010 Home and Student Product Key Card is only licensed for use on one PC, while the Retail package (which includes install CD) is licensed for use on up to three PCs.
