There can be many reasons.... various windows patches do add up.... a few things you can do....
- run disk clean up
- run defragmenter
Also consider getting your memory up to 3gb.

I not a memory specialist, so I'll let others join in....
- are there CMOS limitations?
- are the memory chips socketed or soldered? You may need to open up your case to see what's inside.
Anyways, XP isn't designed to go above 3gb..... as a result, I'm suggesting you stop at 3gb. http://members.cox.net/slatteryt/RAM.html
Perhaps after 6yrs, it's time for a new machine.... XP is no longer supported by Microsoft.
PS.... I love XP!
